How does GPSRemover work?

GPSRemover uses built-in browser Web APIs to process images directly on your device. For JPEG files, we surgically remove the EXIF data segment without re-encoding, so image quality is perfectly preserved. For other formats, we re-render via Canvas to strip all embedded data. The entire process requires no network connection — your images never leave your device.

Are my photos safe? Will they be uploaded to a server?

Absolutely safe. All processing in GPSRemover happens locally in your browser. Your images are never uploaded to any server. The tool works even offline. After processing, you can close the tab immediately — no traces are left behind.

What is EXIF metadata? What is GPS data?

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is a set of metadata embedded in photo files, including capture time, camera model, shooting parameters (aperture, shutter speed, ISO), GPS coordinates, and more. GPS data is part of EXIF that records the precise geographic location (latitude/longitude) when the photo was taken, sometimes including altitude.

Don't social media platforms automatically remove EXIF data?

Some platforms (Instagram, Twitter/X, Facebook) strip partial or all EXIF data on upload. However, not all platforms do this (some forums, cloud storage, email attachments), and the original file still contains the full metadata. For maximum privacy, we recommend cleaning metadata before any sharing.

What's the difference between Fast Clean and Thorough Clean?

Fast Clean removes only the EXIF data segment from JPEG files without re-encoding, completely preserving original quality and file size. Thorough Clean re-renders image pixels via Canvas API and outputs a new JPEG, which strips ALL types of metadata (including XMP, IPTC, and non-EXIF data), but file size may change. For maximum privacy, use Thorough Clean.

What image formats are supported?

GPSRemover supports JPEG (both modes), PNG, WebP, HEIC, and all image formats your browser can render. Note: non-JPEG formats can only use Thorough Clean mode, and output is always JPEG.

Will removing metadata affect image quality?

Fast Clean mode has zero impact on quality since it only removes the metadata segment — pixel data is unchanged. Thorough Clean re-encodes the image; you can control compression via the quality slider (default 92%), and at high quality the difference is virtually invisible.

How can I confirm GPS data was successfully removed?

GPSRemover has built-in verification: after processing, click the 'Verify' button to auto re-scan the cleaned image. You can also use third-party EXIF viewers (like exiftool or online EXIF viewers) to double-check.

Is this tool free? Are there any limits?

GPSRemover is completely free with no limits on usage count, file size, or number of simultaneous files. The tool is open source and free to use. The only technical limit is file size, which depends on your device's memory.

Can I use it on my phone?

Yes. GPSRemover is fully responsive and works smoothly on mobile browsers. You can select images directly from your phone's photo library.

GPSRemover is a browser-based tool that processes all images locally on your device. We do not collect, store, or transmit any of your images or personal data.

All image processing — including EXIF metadata reading, GPS data removal, and image re-encoding — happens entirely within your browser using JavaScript Web APIs. No images are ever uploaded to any server.

We use privacy-friendly analytics (Umami) that does not use cookies, does not track individual users, and does not collect personal data. The only data collected is aggregate page view counts.

We do not use cookies for tracking. The only local storage used is a simple counter for the number of images you have processed, stored in your browser's localStorage.

We do not collect email addresses, names, or any personal information. No account registration is required.
